The world is exploding with software designed for writers.  Beyond word processing, there are innumerable programs to assist you with typing, grammar and style,  There are also numerous specialized programs for every type of writing; screenplays, novels, plot development, etc.

 Typing

Develop your speed.  You may have learned to poke around with your 2 index fingers (aka hunt & peck) with an assist from your thumbs.  It worked for video games and text messaging but you're a big boy (or girl) and its a great, big wide world now.

The last time somebody said, 'I find I can write much better with a word processor', I replied, 'They used to say the same thing about drugs.'    ...   Roy Blount Jr.

Take the time to learn to do it right.  There are a number of good programs out there.  Mavis Bacon is the most popular (up to release 16 at last count).  I found a program called GS Typing Tutor that works, even for an old slow hand like me.  Download a trial version before coughing up the 20 bucks.  I don't know that one system is any better than the other.  Don't believe any of the claims that you can learn in 3 easy lessons or 2 hours.  It is going to take time (months, maybe).  It's worth it.   If you can already touch-type, it may help you pick up your speed.  It can't hurt.

Learn to think through your fingers, without thinking about them

Practice every day for 10-15 minutes.  In a couple of months, you will hear the words in your head as you type, not the individual letters.  If an old dog like me can learn new tricks, so can you.

 Word Processing

In the business world, Microsoft Word rules.  If you plan to get a job in the corporate world, you may have no choice.  If not, there are a plethora of other programs that may better suit your needs.  Here are the names of a few programs that I can recommend:

StyleWriter

Final Draft

yeah write

There are too many alternative WP programs to list here,  We recommend only what we know.  We are always ready to take suggestions.

 Grammar

Grammar (usually including Spell checking) programs abound.   All are subject to skepticism, use with caution.  The following programs are highly recommended:

Grammar Slammer

WhiteSmoke

 Online Grammar Resources

Many online sites are available to help you with dreaded Grammar.  If you feel you need help the following sites are recommended:

Grammar Online

Rules at Grammar Bytes

Guide to Grammar Online

Daily Grammar
